I think this is actually better than The City of Ember and if I was 12 years old I'd probably give this 4 or even 5 stars. But I'm not 12 and I think this is a bit simplistic and I wish Jeanne DuPrau was a bit better at writing suspense.

Still, I think the author did stay true to her main characters, Lina and Doon, and I like that she put them in a different, yet related situation. This picks up right where Ember left off and now the Emberites need to figure out how to survive outside of Ember. It's a cool concept to think about and I like the overall message of this book. I definitely think DuPrau makes the reader ponder a lot of big issues. I just think she could have taken it up a notch or two.
