I started out not liking this book very much: I thought it was going to be a cheap take on the Lolita story. It is not; far from it. It is the story of a gifted 16 year old exchange student from Australia, desperate to escape a squalid life and for a new beginning. Her problem, though, is that she seeks salvation from outside; always hoping a new acquaintance will be her knight, only to be disappointed. i kept hoping she would find a way to help herself, and in the end I was left hanging: is she going to get another chance, back home, or is her mother's letter just a tall tale? I prefer to believe the former option.

Janne I think you got it totally right: I was also worried about the Lolita take, but that did not last.
