it was amazing

Somehow SEP manages to be both brilliant and terrible in her books. This one for instance includes a woman related to powerful men (daughter and wife of different presidents, then wife of powerful journalist) who eventually goes on to take her own power. On the egregious side, SEP plays into our love of fame and famous people by having her main character in the national spotlight, just trying to get away from all the fame and attention. The main character also drops famous names frequently, as if she casually knows all sorts of movie stars and famous political figures. This all sounds like Mary Sue-ism to the extreme, especially since she then goes on to become president (one presumes the first female president).

Yet the books are fun. SEP is often funny and silly and while there is something strikingly off kilter or unnatural about her characters, her books provide fun reads even apart from the shameless mary sue- ism described above. And while all the famous name dropping seems a little overboard, that can feel fun too, feeding into our pulpy, trashy sides that can't help glancing with interest at the headlines of smarmy star watching magazines.

Anyway. All that to say a fun read but definitely on the "guilty pleasure" side of things.
