A quaint book that intersperses the comic with the tragic well enough to make you believe that the author was an excellent observer of all things human -- he was a war correspondent at the time of the book's publication, in any case. Has the book dated since 1943? I think not. Hersey's characters can be inserted into any tale at any time and play the same eternal roles.
