really liked it
bookshelves: sci-fi-speculative, series, teen-fiction

extremely gripping and totally unique. it's kind of like "lord of the flies" times 100 (and co-ed), except for the fact that strange genetic mutations are taking place in kids and animals alike. the narrative is very immediate and information is only revealed as the characters themselves come to some sort of understanding. the mix of characters is excellent, from the brilliant astrid and her autistic little brother, pete to the totally believable sam, edililio, lana and mary. the bad kids are genuinely creepy and sadistic. also some interesting biblical references going on here: "mother mary" as the care-taker of the young, lana lazar as the healer and caine as the evil half-brother....
i can't wait to see where this series leads.
