A bit uneven - de Kretser's choice to shift points of view led to the middle section dragging in some seemingly purposeless (if stunning) descriptions. I loved the metaphors she explored, however, about how a narrative can only artificially organize events, and doesn't actually render truth or sense. In just the same way, the various Ceylonese characters try to array themselves against the encroachment of the jungle with a litany of objects, all of which prove ineffectual. Intriguing, experimental, and lovingly conjured.
