Philip Pullman is my new author-hero. Actually, he's my first author-hero for a very long time. A friend said, "These are the books that needed to be written." I whole-heartedly agree. It's hard to review this book without giving away what happens in the whole series, but all of the characters feel like no other characters that were ever written. Right now, I'm teaching a children's lit. course, and in the context of all the other girl characters that people the pages of children's lit, Lyra is a truly remarkable character, but so finely drawn it's hard to put one's finger on exactly what it is about her that is so different. Also, the depth and intricacy of the world (singular for now)...well, the book is like a geode.
