This 19th c. Italian classic is both tragic and amusing. A young peasant couple encounter many troubles when the local priest will not marry them because a noble wants the girl. The author's sense of humor is farcical at times, but there is also violence in the portrayal of 16th c. northern Italy. The concluding scenes depicting the plague are frightening and dramatic.
