I kind of knew what I was getting into with the space-opera by Asaro. I haven't read the rest of the books in this setting, but I guessed it was going to be heavy on relationship/romance, light on most other stuff. I probably would have given it three stars but I found the overall characterization frustrating and confusing, and at times downright annoying. Del's character seemed too inconsistent, becoming incredibly lacking in confidence when convenient and yet it seemed to come and go too much. There was too much repetition of the same tragedies that hit him, explaining detail we'd had already. The large cast of characters just didn't differentiate enough for me either.

Eh, Asaro's work may just not be my cup of tea. It's a frothy, fun little read if you can forgive the repetitive nature and like a romantic story, but It's not my kind of read.
