How did I miss this book when it first came out?? I saw the author (Bernard Schlink) on Charlie Rose talk about the inspiration of writing this-he need to demonstrate the duplicity of the next generation in Germany-his generation. The fact that the atrocities took place under the watch of their older relatives, neighbors, schoolteachers-such heinous things, yet these were people he loved and respected. How could they have viewed some of the work they did as a job, and just following orders?? He captures the relationship of the young man and Hannah in just this light. Stunning!
