it was ok
bookshelves: young-adult
Read in August, 2009

I have to force myself to finish it (so close). It's too "boy" for me. I keep skipping the "car talk" chapters. It would be a wonderful read for boys. I know it.

My first impression was that it felt very Harry Potterish to me. He's an orphan, doesn't know much about his parents. End up in a "different school". Meets nice adult person who will help him(Dumblebdore/ Hagrid). Meets school bully and his even bigger bully father (blond Americans). Trains rides to their homes over the holiday. Scrappy little side kick (Ron). A little mystery and a little death. Instead of talking about dark magic it's dark lurking waters. Some of the imagery was really freaky to me and I will never dangle my feet in a Loch. Neva!

I think I would rate it higher if I had read it at a different time. It was the only book I had on my flight to my Oma's funeral.
