Similar to Barbara Delinsky's book "The Secret Between Us" in its subject matter, this book is better. It is not a perfect book by any stretch, but it deals with the fallout from a tragic accident in a reasonably realistic way, over a believable period of time, and concludes in a way that leaves you satisfied. Contrary to some of the reviews I read, I did like the juxtaposition of the present day story line with flashbacks to the the mother's childhood experiences. It provided a back story for Lee Churchill that explained why she was how she was, particularly when paralleling some of the relational problems she had with her daughter with her own mother's troubled relationship with her & her sister. Perhaps in the end it would have been a stronger book had there been more of the present day story, but I think over all it worked, and what was unsaid was inferred & easily understood by the reader. Not a bad book at all, and though the subject matter is heavy, it is dealt with in a way that makes it an easy & enjoyable read. It is, in fact, deserving of 3.5 stars, but since that option is not available on Goodreads..3 stars it is.
