Matris Drayke is second in line for the throne of Margolan of the winter kingdoms. As much as he doesn't want to be king, Tris knows he has to reclaim the town after his evil half brother murders the rest of the family with is vyash morue mage. On a journey with the castle's bard and two soldiers, the friends journey to Principality with a guide who's hard to beat and a group of people from a captured caravan. However, on the way, Tris has to master his power before it consumes him and be on the lookout because not everyone is who they seem. The group reaches a friendly kingdom, which is helpful for planning there next move, and a first move on a romance between the "royals."
This book is about revenge. When young Tris' life is turned upside down, he knows he wants revenge, but not as much ashe knows that he's going to have to rule, that his brother has no morals and is terorizing the townspeople. Stories from others further the reach of the grasp of vengence, those who were kidnapped, stolen from, and have also lost loved ones fill this story. The author, Gail Z. Martin, tells us so much, through dialougue, about each character's past, their relatives, giving us so much information about how they tie in, weather it's bride to be of Jared, Tris' ruthless brother, or in service to that unlucky soul,(haha), or the relationship to/between the Drayke family. They all want for this to not be happening, they want to get back at the one,
and his accomplish, who caused their pain, its pretty simple, but it is told so wonderfully, that I couldn't put it down.
