I was going to give this book three stars because I wasn't sure it was grabbing me, but then I cried at the end so I was obviously more invested than I thought. Or idk, maybe I just cry easily. IN ANY CASE: four stars! I bought Catch on a whim. The synopsis didn't really grab me, but the cover (I really like that cover a lot--it's so summery and I'm a sucker for stars) and the excerpt did. It's about a guy named Tim Temples, who's a big shot in his small town. He's just graduated high school and is not sure he wants to go to college because he thinks it ruined his brother. Goodbye high school, hello "real world" (I'm surprised this is even a YA novel because of the whole no-room-for-college-in-YA, but it came out in 2005, so). Anyway, Tim meets this 23-year-old aloof bitch-on-wheels named Helena (it's alway an aloof, bitch-on-wheels, right?) and he falls in love with her and her sad non-collegiate life makes him realize there's a whole world out there and maybe college ain't such a bad idea.

I really enjoyed this novel. There were quite a bit of already dated pop culture references that made me feel old but oh well, Tim's voice was great. Really funny at times. His observations were sharp and spot on in that dry, indie-film kind of way but they don't make you want to stab yourself in the eye for being funny and sharp and spot on dry in that indie-film kind of way (#zachbraffruinseverything, amirite). They're more honest than that. And the small town vibe was so perfect. The location supports everything Tim's character does in an interesting way--you're bored and comfortable. Do what you need to do. I could forgive him just about everything for that, growing up in a super small town myself. This was a slice of life read, so it's not like you were twisting and turning with every page, but that's okay. And it's not really about answering questions, either. Just acknowledging that the questions are there. So I found it very satisfying because those are the types of books I like.

I think reading Catch is more about seeing parts of your past self in Tim and his situation and nodding along. I wasn't always Tim--sometimes I was his friends, or sometimes I saw someone else from the past I knew in him and them. It was strange and familiar and eerie all at the same time. It made me feel nostalgic for a time I'm not particularly eager to revisit.

This was not the novel's fault, but the entire time I was reading I couldn't help but wish it was told from a girl's POV, or from the POV of Tim's girl-next-door good friend, Jessica (I think her story would have been really interesting). I'm still waiting for a book featuring a girl like that, one that doesn't make me want to grit my teeth. Anyway, I think Will Leitch could write that book. Because I think Will Leitch gets how people are lost. So. DEAR WILL LEITCH, PLEASE WRITE THAT BOOK. thnx, c.

Apparently there was a follow-up to this novel due to come out at some point called COME AS YOU ARE, but I haven't heard anything about it. Anybody know what happened to it?
