I wanted to buy this book for publication when I was first working at Knopf round about 1994 or '95. Granted, it wasn't at all Knopf material (NFK was what we wrote on the rejected mss., "Not for Knopf"), but I still loved reading it. I should also reveal that the voice struck me as so authentic that I assumed Blake Nelson must indeed be a girl (he's not). Imagine my surprise years later when watching Gus van Sant's Paranoid Park, that the author of the book the film was based upon turned out to be the same Mr. Nelson, once again reaffirming my good taste, and the fact that it's gotten me nowhere.
