really liked it
Read in July, 2009

I loved French’s second novel, The Likeness, when I read it earlier this year, and I definitely enjoyed this one, the first to feature Cassie Maddox, The Likeness’ heroine. This one is about a murder in the town where Cassie’s partner, Rob Ryan (who narrates the story) and two friends disappeared in the woods when they were twelve. Rob was the only one found, with blood soaking his shoes, and the case was never solved. Parallels between the case and Rob’s own past begin to obsess him and drive him and Cassie apart. I found that the psychological journey Rob goes through wasn’t as fascinating as Cassie’s in The Likeness, although it kept me reading. In a way, it pleases me that this novel wasn’t as good as its successor, as that shows an author who is just getting better.
