An atmospheric story which paints a vivid picture of life in Guatemala in the 1800's. A beautifully written love story that follows the life of Julian, a passionate Cuban writer exiled from his homeland for desiring to free it from Spanish rule. His attentions become torn between two women - his fiance whom he has promised to marry out of loneliness and desperation - and the another: the woman of his dreams. Now truth and honor are at odds. Which will prevail?

Memorable quotes from this book have to be: "When honor and truth are at odds, let truth prevail" and "The truth hurts once, but a lie hurts over and over." Great read.
