Greg Mortenson, once a mountaineer who scaled some of the top mountains in the world, is a kind and enterprising young man. He was deeply saddened for the children of a small remote village called "Korphe" in the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan. Having no schools, no books, no pencils, nor paper, the children were self-schooled by drawing with sticks in the dirt. The poorness of the village and it's remote location made it impossible to build a proper school, that is, until the people of Korphe met Greg Mortenson. After having been graciously nursed back to health after a fall, Greg bonded with the village Chief, Haji Ali and promised to return to his village and build them a school. A fabulous journey filled with excitement, disappointment, theivery, kidnapping, love, and the eventual extraordinary outcome, makes this book very hard to put down. It's one of those books where you say to yourself: "Just ONE more chapter" and five chapters later, you're still reading.

From back cover:

"Here (in Pakistan and Afghanistan), we drink three cups of tea to do business; the first you are a stranger, the second you become a friend, and the third, you join our family, and for our family we are prepared to do anything - even die. Haji Ali, Korphe Village Chief

In 1993 a mountaineer named Greg Mortenson drifted into an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakoram mountains after a failed attempt to climb K2. Moved by the inhabitants' kindness, he promised to return and build a school. THREE CUPS OF TEA is the story of that promise and its extraordinary outcome. Over the next decade Mortenson built not just one but fifty-five schools - especially for girls - in the forbidding terrain that gave birth to the Taliban. His story is at once a riveting adventure and a testament to the power of the humanitarian spirit."
