Set in Nigeria in the mid-80s, about 10 years after the civil war, this was a great follow-on to Half a Yellow Sun.

The central character is a young man growing up in the slums of Lagos, Nigeria. Though the civil war is "over" unbelievable violence continues. This is a situation so far removed from my experience that I find it amazing that people can survive in such an environment, much less thrive. It's an amazing story, very distressing in many respects, but somehow still hopeful. Very well written.
