Beautifully written. I was attached to the character, Nicolas, immediately, and felt like his companion throughout the story. As a mother, my heart ached for Nicolas; many times I wished I could just sweep him into my arms and hold him. This book made me cry and made me compassionate for the hardships the El Salvadorian campesinos endured while their country was in turmoil - innocent people caught between two political views. I love the importance and role the Virgin Mary (la Virgencita) played in this book because it shows Latin culture and our devotion to Mary.
