This 1976 Newbery winner is the fourth book in Susan Cooper’s five book Dark is Rising Sequence, and it is my favorite. Will Stanton is sent to Wales to recover from a severe illness. While there, he begins to remember that he is not a mere boy, but one of the Old Ones, and that he has a quest to fulfill. While fulfilling his task, Will meets Bran, a young albino boy who is deeply and intrinsically tied to the task of the Old Ones. I loved the legends that play a part of this rich story. Readers do not have to have read the previous 3 volumes of the series, but it does add layers to the story to know Will’s history.
