it was amazing
bookshelves: historical-fiction

Just read this again without realizing I was in a familiar story till the middle. What a great story. Historical fiction, late Republican Rome. This was a good story about a large group, if not an entire legion of Roman soldiers that disappeared after the defeat of Crassus in the Middle East. It is thought that they were taken captive, enlisted in the army of Parthia, and sent far east to defend the border there. The local population are of a different genetics than the other locals (blonde hair, blue eyes, not fully Asiatic). There's a town in China called Li-Jan, which is a close approximation of "Legion". I also like how this concentrated on the lives of the slaves, gladiators, etc. The story follows the lives of several characters. One of them is a slave sold into a brothel, and she has an interesting life so far.
