This is not Banks' best. It's a little too jumbled and meandering. But you get a sense of his genius and his attempts at telling a familiar story in unconventional ways. In the middle of the book, he uses the same narrative style of "Use of Weapons," with flashbacks that inform the present story. But they seemed random to me and without the devastating impact of "Weapons." Still, you have to appreciate the world-building he utilizes here; he introduces regions in this planet that could be settings for entire novels. Also, as a nerd-aside: some describe this as space opera, but there's actually no space. The whole novel takes place on one planet. But there is plenty to admire in this long but mostly satisfying Sci Fi.
