This is my second (and probably last) Bruce Sterling novel, the first one being Holy Fire, and I have to conclude that as an idea man, Sterling is great, but he lacks any talent for storytelling. Like Holy Fire, this book provides a fascinating vision of a post-nation-state future, capturing my interest early, but an absolutely incoherent plot. Things just happen for no reason, pivotal characters, events and places are spoken of at length but never appear, and naturally at the end nothing is left explained and the reader is only left more puzzled than before. Does Sterling really think this is a novel? This is the rough outline of a novel at best, something he should have passed on to a real writer who knows how to develop characters and tie events together.
