Twelve year old Cooper Sullivan didn't want to spend his summer in the Black Hills with his maternal grandparents whom he didn't knnow but his parents were off to Europe to try and prevent their fractured relationship degenerating into a divorce. Coop is surprised to find a friend in a 10 year old neighbor girl who is as avid about baseball as Coop. Their teen summers are spent forming a friendship that turns into a romance. However, Coop is determined to achieve success as a New York Police and Lil doesn't want to leave her roots or her plans to build an animal refuge on her family lands. Coop ends their relationship only to return 12 years later to help his grandparents after his grandfather breaks his leg. Lil has had her heart broken and is not open to Coop's desire to renew their romance. Meanwhile, a serial killer has Lil picked as his next target.
Nora Robert's writing style draws you in and keeps you hooked. By the time the book ends, the characters have become your friends and it's hard to let them go.
