really liked it
bookshelves: 2011, lit-contemporary, litfantasy

I so enjoyed reading this. Grossman is by no means a perfect writer - he tends to pair off his adjectives a bit too much, and the slang in the dialogue sometimes seems a bit forced. BUT - so much is packed into these pages - the world of Brakebills, the world of Fillory, and some really great characters. The universe here evokes Narnia and Harry Potter, but Grossman goes beyond these worlds to create his own very effective setup, which could be explored in many, many books in the future. I very much look forward to reading The Magician King.
