Really, a 4.5 as the main character becomes slightly unbelieveable (even for fantasy) during a major chunk of the plot, but it is a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent novel--best adult fantasy I've read in quite some time. I'll be buying my own copy so I can reread when Books 2 and 3 come out--very high praise, as I keep few volumes on my personal bookshelves.

One warning, Book 2 has been a while coming already and there's no publication date that I can find as of Aug 2009. Having been frustrated by George R.R. Martin for years now, I swore never to allow myself to get "Martinized" again, but neglected to check if this were a finished trilogy for some reason. Argh!
