It's been many years since I've read books by Mary Stewart, and in those years long past I never was really aware of the mystery-romance stories she was apparently so well known for. I just recall being absolutely hooked on the Merlin / Arthur books, not being able to put them down, and when finished with one rushing out to find the next in the series.

Having recently come across a collection of Mary Stewart mysteries on my bookshelf, I'm once again blown away by her captivating storytelling. Curious about her own personal and writing "story", I checked Wikipedia and was astonished at what I learned. Apparently, Mary Stewart was the first of the romance/mystery novelists - and by many accounts, the model followed by subsequent and best-selling authors of that genre.

The Ivy Tree is truly suspenseful, with lots of twists and turns, plenty of romantic intrigue, and compelling characters both good and evil. Not weighty literature, but a very fun read.
