I did not enjoy The Year of Magical Thinking. I found Didion unlikeable. Same thing for Play It As It Lays, which I also did not care for because I couldn't figure out why any of the characters acted the ways they did or hated themselves and others and life so much. So I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy the snark of this book. She's so judgy and matter-of-fact. I can't imagine marrying her or being around her; she seems like an emotional wreck but only inconsistently. The rest of the time she's cold, calculating mad scientist poking and prodding to find the best way to extract pain from the bruise. What she does so well is to let the absurdity and cruelty of humanity speak for itself. It's there, she's just reporting it. You can't make this shit up, people.
