This was my first book by Michele Hauf. The characters and the story were engaging and the author's voice flows nicely. I enjoyed the book enough to purchase the next in this series, even though I'm not very fond of werewolf stories (which the second book is about). However, the author intrigued me enough to want to know about this man (who is a secondary character in The Highwayman).

In The Highwayman (Book 1 of Wicked Games) the heroine is a familiar, a cat-shifter who is on her fourth life. The hero is an immortal demon killer who has a demon shadow on his back and hasn't experienced the pleasures of life (eating, sleeping, sex) in over two hundred years. He seeks a familiar to help rid him of the demon and so far they've all failed. Now he's come to her for help. On her wrist is a tattoo to remind her that this man is the enemy, a hunter who would just as easily kill her as he would look at her. And that is his intent once he gets her to rid him of the shadow. After all, he's The Highwayman, her enemy, his job is killing demons and all those associated with them.
