it was amazing
Read in January, 2006

This was the first book of Lahiri's I read. I had to read it for a class and at first glance this would not have been a book I'd've picked up on my own. I fell in love with her writing immediately in the first story. Each one follows a character or charcaters on emotional journeys that are just beautiful and sad and full of humanity.

My favorite is the title story and I've used it in classes that I've taught with beginning writers. They're usually not interested until they realize the journey they've been on. It's fun to watch writing students discover that stories are more than things that happen to people, but what the stories are about as well.

Lahiri can do first person and third person so beautifully and tenderly and has helped me tremendously as a writer.
