really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, read-in-2009

Disclaimer: I don't read fantasy - with the exception of the Harry Potter series. Some have described this as Harry Potter goes to college. I can see that. But it really seems to be a meditation on happiness. What happens when you get what you *think* will make you happiest in the world - and then it doesn't? One of the characters tells another that he can't get away from himself, even in his most cherished of fantasy worlds. I think we can all relate to that - trying to figure out how to be happy, how to like ourselves, how to live in a world that daily gives us reasons to give up hope. The Magicians is a page-turner to be sure, but where the magic meets reality is where it packs the strongest emotional punch.
