What have I learned from this book? That my prayerlessness often stems from feelings of self-sufficiency. That I’ve developed a cynical attitude about prayer. That I ask God for far too little. That prayer, being akin to the infinite God, is not predictable. That unanswered prayer is one of God’s ways of shaping my life. That prayer cards just might be a good idea. But most certainly, that I must put aside my own feelings of clumsiness and desire to perform and starting coming to God in prayer NOW.

So, for the majority of the book Miller deals not with the mechanics of prayer, but the underlying wrong attitudes behind our prayerlessness. He encourages us to stop trying to “fix” our prayers and simply come, messy and unpolished, and ask. Miller does not skirt the tough questions, and he shares from a wealth of experience. This book will leave you with an urgency and desire towards prayer.

Here’s one of my favorite quotes from the book: “Strong Christians do pray more, but they pray more because they realize how weak they are. They don’t try to hide it from themselves. Weakness is the channel that allows them to access grace.” (pg 56)
