The full title for this book is "Splinter of the Mind's Eye: From the Further Adventures of Luke Skywalker." Sadly, this would be the last book that would carry that interesting 'adventures of Luke Skywalker' moniker. It would be scrubbed from Star Wars when that story was later rebranded as 'A New Hope.' This story was written by ADF for a specific reason. Lucas had no assurance that Star Wars would be a hit, and this is the story that would have followed up Star Wars if it went the way of, say, Serenity, a hit with the fans, but not widely well received. "The principal characters are Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader. The book was originally written to be filmed as a low-budget sequel to Star Wars if the original film was not a success." When Star Wars blew up into a global smash, this story fell by the wayside.

I read this before Empire had been filmed. This is now a non-canon spin-off, a nice little look into what-could-have-been, when Leia and Luke still had some of those romantic sparks between them before it was revealed they were brother and sister (a proof that reinforces what I've said for some time, that Lucas didn't /initially/ have the whole three trilogy outline set in his head, or he wouldn't have signed off on this). fwiw, remember that the first version of the Star Wars book was titled, "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker."

This was a delightful story that brought a real sci-fi sensibility to what we know recognize more as space fantasy.
