Nick Hornbys first proper novel is an unassuming classic depicting twentieth century man as he is in male company and how he pretends not to be in female company. That he cannot be the same person shows us that something is wrong somewhere, but that the fault is in men or women cannot be examined as we’d only end up arguing about it.

Every possible failed relationship is examined in a top 5 of worst break up’s by the books hero and narrator Rob as he tries to make sense of his latest failure and his life in general. The story is helped along by the book having its own soundtrack as Rob name checks the singers and songs that have seemingly accompanied Rob’s life. That the books title is taken from a Elvis Costello classic to the catalogue of artists through the book ensures that it’s core audience are the countless males such as myself, Nick and indeed Rob, who have lost years of our lives browsing record shops to find a miss pressing on a bizarre coloured vinyl, that are so ...more
