The Goodread definition of five stars reads "It's amazing". American Psycho is amazing but that doesn't mean I liked it.

There is something that rings true about Ellis' vision of the eighties. It was selfish and shallow in some ways. The Wall Street brokers' greed and misogyny and Bateman's psychopathic insanity isn't all that far apart. I think Ellis is making an indictment of the times not so different than what he did in his first book, Less Than Zero for his own generation. American Psycho is meant to shock and make you uncomfortable. It does that very well, perhaps too well. The author at first drowns you in materialism as Bateman accounts in detail his possessions and his status. That turn into episodes of rampant sex, then takes a turn into the horrific and sado-masochistic. Supreme court justice Hugo Black once said he didn't know what pornography was but "I know it when I see it". I would love to have known what The Honorable Hugo Black would have said about this book. I do not think of American Psycho as pornography at least not in the conventional definition, but it probably comes as close as literature can possibly come and still remain literature. American Psycho is a masterpiece and will be seen as a seminal novel of its time but it is still a difficult and troubling read.

Kathryn Ok. I've been waiting for you to read this. I hope you know I expect at least a one sentence review!

Marvin You'll probably get more than one sentence. I just started and all the details about face masks, fashion names and business card design is driving me nuts! I'm thinking, "Damn it! Kill someone already!"

Kathryn Ha, you are so going to regret saying that!

Marvin LOL!

Kathryn :), Really though, I forgot about the slow build. And I do not have as much experience reading about serial killers as you do, so I am very curious to hear your final opinion.

Michelle I am for sure going to read this book soon, now that you both have read it. Marvin, I'm finishing up SLAUGHTER tonight -- LOVE IT so far! Wanted to try to get your books back to you before they get damaged or you started to worry. See you on Tuesday and Kathryn, I miss you! :)

Kathryn Miss you too!
