    <body><![CDATA[Imperial is sprawling, contradictory, and intense.  Parts wildly compelling, others poorly (and idiosyncratically) edited and dull.  But in the best parts -- when Vollmann's talking with people otherwise unheard, or with people who are lying and misdirecting -- it's a good read.  If you can make it through the other bits (the statistics, tables, oddly-conceived historical reconstructions, tedious font choices, removal of personal boundary, rambling).]]></body>
