Read in June, 2006, read count: 8 + lots of studying

unprecidented scholarly work on a little-known Japanese military cult of the Meiji era. Contains primary sources never before translated into English, presented with incisive analysis of Japanese society, politics, history, and military culture. This could easily have been a very dry read -- but Hillsborough lets the story and the men be the focus. At its core, this is a well-documented STORY of amazing men with conflicting goals and what happens to a subculture when social conservatives and political progressives clash. I originally read this for a research paper, and still read it for fun every year.
