Because the story spans multiple decades, only events important enough (more than often tragedy and disaster) get described, leaving out bits and pieces about the characters' daily life which would make you care more about them.

The endless string of mishaps and successes seems to know no end, making the great tale of Kingsbridge Cathedral almost seem like a soap.

Nevertheless, Follett has created a fantastic work of literature, falling just short of masterpiece proportions.]]>
