Waters is much improved as a writer (no blatant Mary Sue here - first time!). But the plot is slow and jumpy, the descriptions masquerade as plot, and what plot, anyway? I'm perfectly all right with good character-driven stories and I'm perfectly all right with good ambiguity, but this book is 566 pages long. After that sort of long-winded nervy anticipation, I expect some conclusion - or a really riveting conclusion. Waters just isn't good enough to deliver.
Also? Shades of The Haunting of Hill House, almost certainly unintentional, but I just hate petty theft. Even the unintentional sort.
