This book is largely character driven. Nate is at the center of this story as a school teacher and former drug addict who takes a job at a prep school to be nearer to his biological daughter, Willa. At the school we also meet Claire, Teddy, Willa's adoptive parents and a myriad of other characters whose lives all end up being connected in some way.

The story is dark in that it deals with AIDS, drug use, pornography and deceit. I still enjoyed it however as the characters are well written and the tale itself was interesting.
