I read this book because one of my book clubs was reading it. This is the first Capote I read. All along, I was totally hooked. Although this is a true account of a murder, way back in 1959, and the reader already knew who the victims and the murderers are right from the start, it was still a great suspense all along.

I would have given this book a rating of 4.5, if possible, but not 5 because of the monotonous writing. Although only 340-odd pages, I kept putting the book down often and took a week to complete it.

As I kept turning the pages, I couldn't help feeling sympathy for the murderers as much as for the victims. For a good 50 pages, I must have cried! Capote's sympathy with the killers, especially one of them is very intriguing. I didn't want to feel anything but hatred for the killers, but I couldn't, after knowing the kind of life they had.

Right from the first page to the last, I was always hooked. i just wished it was written the way it was, like a routine review (journalistic non-fiction). Journalistic non-fiction is apt for small articles or short accounts, not a 300-plus page book.

All in all, a very satisfying read.
