Lieutenant Eve Dallas is beautifully badass! Her relationship with her husband Roarke is so sexy strong and J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) is at her best when creating snappy dialogue between each memorable character of this story. Robb is particularly good at cop banter.

The basic plot is the murder of a police officer, who also happened to date the Chief Medical Examiner (one of Dallas' close friends). The case then proceeds to involve crooked cops and the criminal Ricker family, of whose tangled history with Eve's and Roarke's I'm not that familiar with since I started the In Death series mid-way and never read the first books. Yet "Promises" can stand alone and lives up to its promise of an addicting read, to the death.
