The first chapter is a pain, a REAL PAIN to get through, but is necessary for the rest of the book. Standard Moore storytelling, but I guess I expected more from his first major prose work.

Geoff Combs the first chapter is told from the POV of a paleolithic boy about 10,000 BCE in the area where Birmingham, England will one day be. So it's told with his vocabulary. His vocabulary of about forty words. And the first chapter is the longest... However, subsequent chapters are pretty darn good, especially the very last.
