Joanne Harris’ Holy Fools is one of those books that I bought on a whim, and probably because Amazon had it used for really cheap. The only reason it was my next read is because I made Mr. Pants pick out a book for me from the rapidly dwindling “to be read” shelf.
It starts out a little slow, but I thought it turned out really well. In fact, I stayed up late last night just to finish it. I think it is well written and sufficiently intricate so that I couldn’t tell you right away what would happen in the end. I liked the main character, I cared about her, which I think is really a mark of good writing.
It centers around a monastery in 17th century France, but there are love stories and plots, intrigue and murder, acrobats and thieves. All sort of exiciting, and right along the lines of the sort of escapist fiction I tend to prefer.
Verdict: A-
