Not just a history book about a war-torn country, this is a personal story of a foreign woman living deep in the community for many years. She witnessed and participated in some of the defining moments for this now independent small state and learned about all of the peoples living there in its most transitional period. More than just a story on the evening news, Mary reminds us of the real people that are effected by "ethnic conflict." And because of her foreignness she can get away with telling the truth and bridging the gaps in a way that no Serbian or Albanian can. I think this is an excellent read for anyone interested in Balkan history or people.
