really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, science-fiction, young-adult

In memory of Anne McCaffrey, I've decided to review the first book I read in the Dragonriders of Pern series. From the perspective of the whole series, this is certainly not the most vital book, nor the one I would recommend reading first, but I was about 13, and came across it in the corner of a classroom during "mandatory reading time" (not something I needed, as I regularly slacked off on my other homework to read). I had no idea what Thread was or the meaning of the background politics mentioned, but the idea of the Harper Hall, dragons and fire-lizards, Piemur and his friends, and the world of Pern were fascinating to me. I was already a fantasy fan, but reading the Pern series led me to a lifelong love of science fiction as well. Looking at this book as an adult, it has many flaws, but its ability to capture the reader's imagination can't be faulted. I will always be glad I picked up this book.
