There seems to be three camps concerning this book (and the actual event). They are (1) those who say it's all fake, BS, just to make money, etc., (2) those who take everything that Anson writes to be unquestioningly true and without error, and (3) those, like me, who maybe believe parts of the story with some skepticism and perhaps some belief. Here's why I'm part of the third group:

As far as what I've read (and this doesn't include people posting things on blogs without even anecdotal credibility)...

(1) In the late 70s, George and Kathleen Lutz both took a lie detector test concerning the Amitiyville Horror, which they both passed.

(2) The DeFeo murders are still puzzling and unnerving--no one heard many gunshots, the position of the bodies, toxicology reports coming out negative, and so on.

(3) The real catholic priest from the book corroborating at least some of the story (a pressure against his face, hearing "get out", etc).

(4) Several family members, friends, and other independent witnesses telling at least partially corroborating stories that were reported in the more than forty hours of the Lutz's interview tapes in which Anson based the book--as well as some investigation of his own.

(5) George Lutz attested to the story until his dying day.

Discrediting sources (e.g., Snopes.com) write that the police were never called to the residence, and that this is a contradiction to the story. In fact, the book never mentions anyone officially calling the police--just a priest having an off-the-record conversation with a cop who was involved with the DeFeo murders.

At any rate, probably some of the story is not factual; however, quite possibly at least some of it is, and that makes it all the more interesting. Suspend judgment and come over to camp number three for a while...with a little objectivity and imagination this book will scare you, if not "scare the hell out of you".
