Read in October, 2009 , read count: 1

So after walking through the literature section at the bookstore and perusing the titles of so many books that I felt that I SHOULD HAVE read and had not, I decided to begin to read some of the classics that high school and college did not cover. So I started with The Count of Monte Cristo. First off, I was amazed at how long it was (yes, I went for the unabridged version), but I love long books, so I wasn't intimidated. Let me just say that it has NEVER taken me so long to read a book of ANY size. I was captivated by the beginning, where Dumas relates us to the time that Edmond spends in jail and how he forms a friendship with his cell neighbor. I couldn't put the book down! But the Edmond escapes from confinement, and something happens that made the book EXTREMELY tedious. Between trying to figure out who was who from the beginning of the book and the middle was so trying! People were going by different names and it was almost like you were supposed to know who they were without being told. So at times I was slightly confused, but I caught on quickly. Now the END of the book was just as good as the beginning. I was so interested in seeing Edmond exact his revenge on those who had wronged him and reward those that had tried to aid him in the beginning that I couldn't wait to read the next pages!

Overall I liked it, but I probably would have enjoyed it much more had I read the abridged version. I really enjoyed the story of revenge with a little romance thrown in.
