This is the fifth in the Benjamin January series. After the darkness of Sold Down the River, this one reads almost as a farce. Yes, the twin themes of race and gender relations are still with us, but the story and the characters are simply hilarious! Duelling opera companies, pyrotechnics, and Italian patriots play out a fine Mardi Gras tale in this suspenseful mystery.
